In short

For CCTV systems at sites without fixed-line internet, a roaming SIM card provides connectivity for the recorder or cameras. If footage only needs to be uploaded (not viewed live or downloaded remotely), a dynamic IP SIM from £2.20/month is enough. For remote viewing and management, a private IP SIM with VPN keeps the recorder off the public internet while still allowing authorised remote access.

Connectivity for cellular CCTV

CCTV installations at construction sites, remote car parks, agricultural buildings and similar locations often don’t have access to fixed-line broadband. A 4G or 5G router paired with a roaming SIM card provides connectivity for the recorder, allowing footage to be stored locally and, where needed, accessed or uploaded remotely.

Because reliability matters for security systems – a camera that goes offline is a camera that isn’t recording – we recommend a multi-network roaming SIM as standard. This means the connection automatically uses whichever of O2, Vodafone or EE has the strongest signal at the site, reducing the risk of coverage gaps from a single operator.

Choosing between dynamic and private IP

The right SIM depends on how the system is used day to day:

  • Cloud-based systems that upload footage or alerts to a hosted platform typically work well on a dynamic IP roaming SIM – the recorder only needs outbound access.
  • On-site recorders (NVRs/DVRs) that you or a monitoring company need to log into remotely benefit from a private IP SIM with VPN, so the recorder’s login and video streams aren’t exposed to the public internet.
  • Integrations requiring a fixed address – for example, a third-party monitoring platform that connects directly to the recorder’s IP – may need a fixed public IP SIM, ideally combined with the hardening steps in our router security guide.

Hardware

We supply SIM cards alongside industrial routers from Teltonika and Milesight, both of which are widely used to provide cellular connectivity for CCTV recorders and NVRs. If you’re specifying a new system, get in touch and we can recommend a router and SIM combination for your site.
